The aim of this volume is to add a multidisciplinary perspective in the studies of migration’s history, with each contribution viewing and analysing the phenomenon from different lens. Inspired by an international conference that produced rewarding generate in-depth dialogue between researchers working in fifteen countries around the globe, the present contributions give voice to all forms of “migration”, that is both the real human movements and the migration of ideas and cultural elements, by delineating the political, social, cultural and psychological effects of this phenomenon, but also question how it was reflected in the literature, art, history and philosophy.
Thus, the contribution of Francesca Ceci studies the value of migration as a response to the human urge to travel and explore, analysing various missions to the ‘border of the world’ and comparing ancient and modern; Kresimir Vukovic treats the role of migration as a cultural tradition, using the case of ancient Rome; Marco Galdi examines the social aspect of human migration in his study on national identity, and citizenship and Chrysovalantis Steiakakis draws the attention on the interconnection between art, ideology and migration in an intriguing study that investigates the mobility of Greek artists during the Dictatorship (1967-1974). And this to mention just a few: We believe that the reader of these acts will be pleased to find here numerous compelling studies that provide an unconventional, but multi-faceted understanding to a phenomenon old as the humanity itself.
